The BlueMotion version of Volkswagen's seventh generation Passat is available to order. Thanks to a range of economy-boosting changes it manages nearly 70mpg.
Powering the BlueMotion is a 104bhp, 1.6-litre, common rail turbodiesel engine, driving through a six-speed manual gearbox.
Measures to save fuel include battery regeneration and a stop-start system - these are shared with Passat models carrying the 'BlueMotion Technology' label. There are aerodynamic changes to reduce drag too including a new grille, lowered suspension and a rear spoiler for the saloon. Low rolling resistance tyres are fitted to 'lightweight and aerodynamic' 16-inch steel wheels with 17-inch alloys as an option.
Official combined cycle fuel economy is 68.9mpg for the saloon and 65.7mpg for the estate. Carbon dioxide emissions are 109- and 113g/km respectively.
Economical motoring needn't mean sacrificing creature comforts as the BlueMotion comes with curtain airbags, air conditioning and iPod compatible in-car entertainment as standard.
Prices start at £19,875, representing a premium of £220 over the Passat S, with the first cars being delivered in July.
