What is it?
This is the new Volkswagen Passat, but you knew that as soon as you saw the picture, right? It's not really an all-new car, but a step-change of the Golf MK VI type; the current Passat's chassis and cabin architecture remain, but they're re-skinned.
Why's it here?
The facelift is basically a way of boosting Passat sales on the cheap, relatively speaking. It's a sharper looking car, with improved fit and finish, and an engine range that's cleaner and offers something for everyone. There's a 69mpg BlueMotion version powered by a 1.6-litre diesel engine, and at the other and of the scale a variant powered by the Golf GTI's 207bhp 2.0-litre TSI engine.
Show stopper or floor filler?
Every panel except the roof is changed from the sixth generation car, and there are some intriguing options available. A fatigue sensor, for one, and auto braking for times when you're not quite quick enough to detect that imminent front-end shunt. Plus the front seats can cool their occupants as well as heat them. First deliveries January 2011.
