The Mercedes-Benz ML is set to offer best in class economy of 47mpg and carbon dioxide emissions of just 158g/km when it goes on sale in April 2012.
A new four-cylinder 2.1-litre turbodiesel engine will be used to achieve these figures in the ML 250. It has 201bhp and uses a seven-speed automatic gearbox with stop-start as standard. It will also feature brake energy recuperation to attain the 47mpg economy.
Mercedes also promises a hybrid version of the next M-Class that will raise fuel economy to 54.3mpg. It uses the same diesel engine as the ML 250 but also features a 20bhp electric motor.
The new ML is 24mm longer, 16mm wider and 19mm lower than the outgoing car, but it shares the same wheelbase as the car it replaces. For the moment, the new ML is set to be offered only as a five-seat model.
Prices and specifications for the full ML range will be announced closer to the car going on sale in the UK in April 2012.
