The AA advise on eclipse

The AA is backing the Highways Agency's advice to eclipse-spotters to plan their journey before travelling south-west this August.

Between 500,000 and four million people are expected to make the trek to Devon and Cornwall to witness the total eclipse of the sun on 11 August, and traffic congestion is predicted on all main routes at peak times.

An AA spokesman says, "Make sure you plan your journey in advance. If you are planning to stay make sure you have booked accommodation before you leave. Thousands of people driving around and looking for hotels, B&Bs or campsites at the last minute will make road conditions even worse. The key to preventing major traffic traumas this summer is plenty of forward planning."

Land Rover in Kosovo

Land Rover know how to exploit a good publicity situation!
Land Rover has provided seven field-prepared Discoverys and Defender 110s to the Government Department of International Development. The vehicles, destined for Pristina in Kosovo, were loaded onto an Ilyushin 76 cargo plane at Kent International Airport in Ramsgate. The vehicles will be used by the World Health Organisation and the Department of International Development, to provide vital
mobility to relief agencies, in their efforts to restore stability and safety to the region and to resettle refugees in the war torn area.

Bill Baker, director of public relations programmes at Land Rover, said: "For more than 50 years, Land Rover vehicles have been first on the scene following humanitarian and natural disasters. The four-wheel drive capability of Land Rovers assures a rapid response under the most difficult of conditions, both on and off-road."

June car sales riding high

The Retail Motor Industry Federation welcomes the new car sales figures for June 1999 which show an increase of 15.7 per cent over June 1998. This is a total of 196,442 new cars compared to 169,789 last year. June's figures bring the year to date to a total of 1,191,329, an increase of 4.8 per cent over the first six months of last year.

Alan Pulham, Franchised Dealers Director of the Retail Motor Industry Federation, said: 'We are now halfway through the first year of a two letter registration change. The year to date figures would suggest we are to see a market in excess of 2.25 million which would be bigger than last year and the second largest ever (largest 2.30 million in 1989).'
