GSi - A MONDEO ST200 RIVAL OR JUST THE ULTIMATE VECTRA? |

![]() |
From its new, aggressive front air dam and 17 inch alloy wheels, to the rear spoiler and chrome twin exhaust pipes, the new Vectra GSi shows that it is a serious driver's car. Decent performance and a deep V6 exhaust note prove it. Developed exclusively for the UK, the 2.5i 24v V6 engine is tuned by Motor Sport Developments (MSD) in Milton Keynes who have been responsible for the Vectra SRi V6 Challenge race cars. The standard V6 engine's power output is increased from 170PS to 195PS by using the inlet and exhaust camshafts from the 3.0-litre ECOTEC engine. Torque has been improved for the new GSi to a maximum of 193.1lb.ft at 3750rpm, compared to 184.4lb.ft for the previous GSi model. The increase in torque, at 3,500 rpm, is not only at the top end - the torque curve is now much flatter. Other V6 models come with 169.9lb.ft of torque. |
The Vauxhall Vectra GSi accelerates from 0-60mph in just 7.6 seconds and to a maximum speed of 148mph (143mph for the estate). Switchable traction control keeps this performance under control. The latest generation ABS brakes with improved pedal feel have been fitted across the new Vectra range, and for the GSi's extra performance it has upgraded brake pads with increased airflow to maintain braking performance. The Vectra SRi's sports chassis and lowered (by 20mm) suspension means less body roll and better cornering which, combined with bigger 17 inch alloy wheels with Yokohama ultra-low profile tyres, ensures excellent handling, if a little less refinement. Improvements for the latest GSi include thicker front and rear anti-roll bars for better cornering and changes to the steering's ratios and gear valves give it a more positive feel, with improved turn-in and more feedback. The GSi also has 20 per cent brighter headlights, bigger door mirrors and extra interior storage space plus improved safety with dual airbags now standard. Remote control central deadlocking and an alarm system are also standard. Inside the GSi has a sporty and luxurious specification, which includes: |
