AUDI INTO THE 2000 MODEL YEAR

The fabulous Audi A6 2.7T Quattro
A package of improvements spanning the majority of Audi models has just been implemented to ensure that the brand ventures into the next century as competitively as possible. The enhancements made to each model will be as follows:

Audi A6
Sporting intent: the A6 2.7 T quattro
The latest arrival in the line-up of exciting new Audi model variants planned for the near future is the new A6 2.7 T quattro, which is now available to order. On-the-road prices have been confirmed at 33,149.33 for the Saloon and 34,318.45 for the Avant (UK prices), and first deliveries are expected in mid-July. Power for this high

performance alternative to the continuing 2.8 and 4.2 quattro models is provided by a new version of the 2.7-litre twin turbo engine used first by the S4 quattro. A number of modifications have been made to tailor this acclaimed unit to suit the executive character of the A6, the most significant being a slight reduction in turbocharger boost pressure and a reworked engine control unit.

Through the standard six-speed manual gearbox, the twin intercooled, 30-valve V6 delivers 230bhp at 5800rpm and an impressive 310Nm (228lb ft) of torque between 1700 and 4600rpm. From rest it can launch the A6 2.7 T quattro to 62mph in 7.1 seconds and on to a 152mph maximum speed. The renowned quattro four-wheel-drive system, in conjunction with lowered sports suspension, enables the 2.7 T quattro driver to tap into the engine's power reserves on demanding roads with complete confidence.

Audi's Electronic Differential Lock (EDL) traction control system and Electronic Stability Program (ESP) also back up the quattro technology to maximise safety, and ABS-equipped, ventilated disc brakes with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) provide strong and reliable stopping power. As a distinguishing mark the A6 2.7 T quattro is fitted with exclusive 16-inch, five-spoke alloy wheels with 215/55 R16W low profile tyres. Along with the six-speed gearbox, they are the only equipment differences between the newcomer and the longstanding 2.8 quattro model. Principal items fitted as standard include remote central locking, electronic climate control with individual driver and passenger settings, electric front and rear windows and mirrors, electric seat height adjustment and front and side airbags for the driver and front passenger.

Extra visual appeal
Visually, the latest generation Audi A6 has benefited from the addition of 16-inch nine-spoke alloy wheels for all standard models. These replace the 15-inch lightweight forged aluminium alloy wheels which have been fitted since launch. SE versions will continue with the 16-inch ten-spoke wheels which are currently used. Lowered sports suspension also lends the new generation A6 a more purposeful air. It is now fitted as standard to all A6 models to maximise ride composure and handling balance, although customers can opt for the more comfort-biased suspension set-up at no extra cost.

Inside, all models are now equipped with a front passenger airbag deactivation switch for use when a child seat is fitted, while SE versions gain a multi-function leather rim steering wheel incorporating stereo and mobile telephone controls (factory fit only). 2.4 SE and 2.5 TDI SE models also now feature cruise control and headlight washers. To guarantee the highest possible degree of stability and driver control, Audi's ESP Electronic Stability Program is now a standard fitment for the A6 2.8 quattro. Originally used only by the range-topping A6 4.2 quattro, ESP employs sensors to monitor every movement of the car, and in extreme situations unites the electronic engine management, braking and traction control systems to take just the right amount of corrective action - all in milliseconds.

Despite the improved specification, prices for the A6 line-up remain unchanged, with the exception of the 2.5 TDI SE and 2.5 TDI quattro which have actually been reduced in price to 28,068.63 and 30,025.00 respectively. The range begins with the A6 TDI 110, costing 23,150.08, and is headed by the A6 Avant 4.2 quattro, costing 44,572.68. Some minor changes have, however, been made to the A6 model structure for 2000. Standard 2.5 TDI, 2.8 and 2.8 SE versions will no longer be available, so as a result the A6 2.5 TDI will only be offered in SE or quattro trim and the A6 2.8 solely as a quattro.

Audi A8
During the revision of the A8 for 1999, every model received an equipment upgrade. For the 2000 model year the list of safety features has been extended by a front passenger airbag deactivation switch and ISOFIX child seat preparation.

Audi A3
A number of changes have been made to the A3 hatchback range to make it more attractive to customers who value function as highly as form:
Three plus two equals even greater practicality
The majority of versions, with the exception of the new S3 quattro, are now available in a new five-door body style which brings maximum versatility without impairing the visual impact of the original three-door design.

The Audi A3 five-door is available to order now, with first deliveries expected in mid-August. Each model will carry a premium of approximately 650 over its equivalent three-door counterpart, so the range will start with the A3 1.6 five-door costing 15,880.35 and finish with the A3 1.8 T quattro Sport five-door costing 22,799.93. For every model this price includes the addition of rear electric windows, a third head restraint and three-point centre seatbelt for the rear seat, plus child-proof catches for the rear doors.

Wider choice for diesel devotees
Until now the A3 range has included only the 110bhp version of Audi's acclaimed four-cylinder TDI engine. To maximise customer choice this engine is now also available in 90bhp guise, creating an A3 model which could be perceived as an even more fuel efficient alternative to the 1.6-litre entry-level petrol A3.

A3 TDI 110 reduced in price
To make the spirited performance and fuel efficiency of Audi's 1.9-litre TDI 110 engine an even more viable proposition, prices for all TDI 110 models have been reduced for the 2000 model year. The reduction is by around six per cent in each case, and as a result the standard three-door A3 1.9 TDI 110 now costs 17,050.65 OTR, rising to 19,360.70 for the A3 1.9 TDI 110 SE. New five-door models carry the aforementioned 650 premium.

An even greater variety of options
Audi's Electronic Stability Program (ESP) is now available as an optional extra for A3 models. Already a cost option for the majority of A4 models (standard on 2.8 petrol versions), and fitted as original equipment to some A6 and all A8 models, ESP can be specified for the majority of the A3 range, the one exception being the 1.8-litre 125bhp version with automatic transmission. Recaro front sports seats with electric height, backrest and lumbar support adjustment are also now available for all three-door A3 models, providing optional Onyx leather upholstery is selected.
