Kia and Magna Powertrain have announced details of the Dynamax All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) system, fitted to the new Sportage.
Described as 'a continuous and fully active AWD coupling system' the key feature is a control unit that is said to monitor driving conditions and anticipate demands placed on the transmission. A multi-plate clutch with electro-hydraulic actuation manages the torque distribution.
Claimed advantages include improved cornering stability and high thermal capacity to prevent overheating, even when hill-climbing or towing. The operation of Dynamax and the energy usage of the electronic components have been designed to keep fuel consumption and CO2 emissions to a minimum.
The Sportage - on sale from 1 August - is the first vehicle to use this transmission. Expect to see it on other four-wheel drive cars and crossovers in the future.
