The next generation Touareg from Volkswagen gains the new family snout as seen on the Golf, Polo and also the new Sharan that the Touareg shares stand space with. It's longer, wider and lower than the 4x4 it replaces and Volkswagen is also set to introduce its first hybrid model with the 3.3-litre model.
Why's it here?
The Touareg has been a sales success for Volkswagen and helped it reach further up the market place, so the new model is very important to the company to continue this push. It's also likely to be good to drive thanks to 3.0 V6 and 4.2 V8 turbodiesels for most models, though the bias is definitely towards on-road dynamics. However, there will be an Escape model with the 3.0 V6 turbodiesel and added ground clearance for adventurous types.
Show stopper or floor filler?
The Touareg edges into show stopper territory for its handsome looks and the arrival of Volkswagen's first proper production hybrid. The Touareg hybrid uses a 3.3-litre petrol engine and electric motor to deliver 34.4mpg and reduced emissions. The new Touareg is also 200kg lighter than equivalent models from the outgoing range, which will help with fuel consumption and CO2 output. Expect prices to start at £36,000 when the Touareg reaches showrooms in August.
