The Flextreme GT/E is Vauxhall's vision of the next generation of electric cars, which the company says will have much greater range and deliver better performance than the current crop of volt-drainers.
Why's it here?
Vauxhall is looking further ahead with the Flextreme, so this family-sized saloon concept is said to have a top speed in excess of 125mph. It will also be able to cover 300 miles on a single charge of its batteries and fill of its fuel tank. Unlike current hybrids, the Flextreme uses its 1.4-litre petrol engine to charge the batteries, which Vauxhall says also helps to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
Show stopper or floor filler?
The Flextreme GT/E is show stopping fodder just for its looks, but when you consider the technology that Vauxhall is proposing it's one of the important cars of this year's Geneva gathering. Vauxhall calls the Flextreme an 'Extended Range Electric Vehicle' and says it's working towards this being a reality. It all bodes well for the upcoming Ampera and Vauxhall says, with a smile, that the Flextreme is not just a concept, but will develop into a production model possibly by 2013.
