Volkswagen has revealed a 'study' of a more powerful Golf GTi to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Golf GTi called simply the Edition 30. It is unclear whether or not a production version is on the cards, but given the proliferation of hot hatches with more than 200bhp it is quite likely that the engine will at least make it into a new version of the GTi.
Based on the turbocharged direct-injection four-cylinder employed in the current
VW Golf GTi, the power output has been increased from 197bhp to 227bhp. Other VW Group brands are known to have plans for higher powered versions, including a 237bhp Leon Cupra R.
The Edition 30 study features distinctive visual changes, including matt black 18-inch alloys and a lower body painted in the same colour as the rest of the car (it's black on the current GTi). At the rear, the lights are darker and there is a small 'Edition 30' plaque. Inside, part-leather sports seats, red-stitched leather steering wheel, 'Edition 30' door styling and a gear knob in the form of a golf ball complete the changes.
