What's the news?
To celebrate the launch of the latest Beetle Cabriolet at the Los Angeles Auto Show last week Volkswagen UK has opened the car's order books. The third generation model will build on the success of the second, which sold 230,000 examples over its eight-year lifespan.
Exterior
Whilst the new model is lower, longer and wider than the previous one, the classic Beetle shape still remains. The increase in size means a bigger boot; and there is more headroom in the back. When folded, a cover fits over the canvas roof.
Available in three trim levels from launch, the top spec Sport versions get 18-inch alloy wheels, front fog lamps and gloss black door mirrors as standard.
Interior
The interior design mimics that of the coupé version. Base-level 'Beetle' models get air conditioning, a DAB radio and remote central locking as standard. Mid-level 'Design' trim adds Bluetooth, iPod connectivity and a leather wrapped steering wheel, whereas top of the range Sport versions gain cruise control, sports seats and dual-zone climate control.
Optional equipment now includes keyless entry, satnav, and the Fender sound pack featuring a 400W sound system with illuminated speakers.
Mechanicals
Every engine available in the Beetle coupé can now be had in the Cabriolet version: that's 1.2-, 1.4- and 2.0-litre TSI petrol engines; a 2.0-litre TDI unit and a 1.6-litre TDI option with BlueMotion Technology. Gearboxes can be had as either a five- or six-speed manual; or as six- or seven-speed DSG automatic.
ESP, brake assist and hill hold assist are fitted as standard to keep drivers on the road, combined with a multitude of airbags and automatic roll-over protection in case things go wrong.
Anything else?
Specifically for launch, Volkswagen has launched three special edition Beetle Cabriolets. The '50s Edition' sports a black paint finish on the body and alloy wheels, chrome mirrors and leather upholstery. '60s Edition' cars come in either 'Denim Blue' or 'Candy White' with bi-colour leather seats; and '70s Edition' models include a metallic brown exterior, a beige hood and beige leather.
Prices start from £18,150, with first deliveries expected next April.
