Ford has been quick to build on the excitement and acclaim surrounding the launch of the new Mustang (which made its appearance at the
2004 Detroit Show by unveiling a Convertible version just a year later. The 2005 Mustang restored much of the spirit that has been lacking in the name from the previous few generations, and signalled something of a resurrection of the icon that has in recent times, struggled to recapture the success and adoration associated with the name in the 1960s and '70s.
Since its inception, Convertible sales have accounted for approximately 12% of the Mustang's total sales, so the new model's success is critical. Ford acknowledged this and from day one the Convertible was designed alongside the coupe to ensure its structural integrity was up to the job without any loss in dynamic abilities or crash worthiness as a result of the removal of the roof.
The exterior styling shares the evocative cues of the fixed head version whilst adding ingredients from the original 1960's drop-top, adding up to a package that is unmistakably a Ford Mustang whilst being completely fresh and modern. Also in common with the coupe are the new 4-litre six-cylinder and 4.6-litre V8 power units, ensuring the performance matches the looks.
The thorough engineering approach means that more focus than ever was placed on refinement and occupant comfort with issues such as wind buffeting given serious consideration. The Convertible also features a heated glass rear screen, which works in conjunction with thin C-pillars and rear quarter lights to offer excellent all-round visibility, not traditionally a strong point for the convertible derivatives of the Mustang. The 2005 Mustang Convertible goes on sale in the spring of this year. Ford is rumoured to be seriously considering importing the Mustang to Europe as well. Here's hoping.
