Hippies of the world rejoice; the preferred mode of transport for the flower power generation is back but has received a complete 21st century modernisation. While the original VW campers were only marginally better than sleeping rough the new California Beach looks to be the next best thing to snuggling down in a hotel bed - with sleeping space for four adults when the pop-top roof is raised.
As standard the California range comes fitted with 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning and a CD/radio with eight speakers. Customers are also able to choose from a raft of options including larger alloy wheels, a 32-litre cool/warm box, programmable parking heater, an awning, privacy glass, double glazing and Bluetooth. The choice of Sunny Yellow exterior paint and 'Takato' upholstery are exclusive to Beach models.
Power for the California Beach is provided by either a 112bhp BlueMotion 2.0-litre TDI unit that returns 40mpg and emits 184g/km, or a 138bhp version of the same engine that returns 37mpg and 203g/km.
Prices for the Beach start at £34,970 - or £379 a month with a Volkswagen Solutions Personal Contract Plan.
