What is it?
While still classed as a design study the VW Beetle R Concept shows what could happen to the new Beetle should VW's tuning division get its hands on it. No details of power or drivetrain were revealed in Frankfurt, but we can expect more than the 197bhp offered in the current rage-topping Beetle, though probably less than the 261bhp offered in the Scirocco R.
Why's it here?
The new generation Beetle has been styled to appeal as much to men as to the fairer half (unlike its predecessor) and us blokes are always partial to a car with a bit of oomph so the Beetle R would make the ideal third string to VW's R line-up behind the Golf and Scirocco. Whilst we're still unconvinced that men are likely to opt for the Beetle over the other two it would make the decision a little more difficult.
Show stopper or floor filler?
The paintwork may have a silly name (it's called 'Serious Grey'), but oversized arches, bumpers widened by 30mm each and a rear wing that doubles as a table are always going to draw attention.
