A classic Volkswagen Camper and sporty Ford Escort RS2000 are set to be two of the stars of green motor show EcoVelocity that runs from 8-11 September.
The classic pair will show how old cars can potentially cut it with moderns for economy and emissions thanks to the latest technology. Each car features a modern engine from the same maker as the original, so the VW Camper gains a 90bhp 1.9-litre turbodiesel and the Escort a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol unit from the latest Focus.
With the addition of stop-start technology, and possibly even hybrid power, these classics can cut their emissions by up to 30% while improving fuel economy.
The two cars are also designed to incorporate modern safety technology such as ABS anti-lock brakes and ESP traction and stability control.
Giles Brown of EcoVelocity said: "People perceive that being environmentally sympathetic must mean switching to battery electric power or full hybrid cars. But EcoVelocity is about all means of 'going green' and this experiment shows that, with the right application of technology, the good old combustion engine has a good 20 years left in it yet.
"EcoVelocity is about real-world cars for real-world motorists and this shows that you can take cars destined for classic status and keep them running on a clear conscious."
