The next generation of Vauxhall Zafira will go on sale at the end of 2011 and the production model is closely based on the Zafira Tourer concept car recently seen at the
Geneva Motor Show.
As these first official images show, the new Zafira retains much of the concept car's looks. However, Vauxhall's new MPV takes a step up in size over its predecessor and is based around the Insignia. This means a 190mm increase in overall length compared to the outgoing model.
The extra length allows the new Zafira to offer greater interior space and flexibility. Vauxhall's latest Flex7 seating system introduces three individual middle row seats rather than the bench used in previous Zafiras. The centre seat can be slid forward and rotated to give the outer two seats' occupants more shoulder space.
Vauxhall has also come up with what it calls the 'FlexConsole' storage system for front seat passengers. It's similar to the one already seen in the Meriva and has a moveable cupholder built in.
The third row of seats in the new Zafira has more space for passengers and they fold flat into the boot floor. When folded away, the boot of the Zafira now offers 710 litres of cargo space, up 65 litres on the outgoing car. The centre row seats now also fold flat into the floor and, when stowed away, release up to 1,860 litres of carrying capacity.
Interior quality has been greatly improved for the new Zafira, says Vauxhall, and safety is also a prime concern. As well as the expected airbags and ESP, the new Zafira will be available with optional Adaptive Cruise Control with Collision Mitigating Braking, similar to the systems already in use by Volvo and Volkswagen.
Other safety systems on offer include Forward Collision Alert, Side Blind Spot Alert and Advanced Parking Assist.
The whole engine range will come with six-speed manual gearboxes as standard, other than the 1.8-litre petrol model, which has a five-speeder. A six-speed automatic transmission will be optional with some engines. There are two petrol units in the form of a 138bhp 1.4-litre turbo and non-turbo 1.8-litre also with 138bhp.
Diesel engines will account for most sales and there are three to choose from. All are 2.0-litre turbodiesel units, starting with a 109bhp version, followed by 128- and 163bhp iterations. Some engines in the range will come with stop-start, but Vauxhall has yet to confirm which ones.
Vauxhall has also still to announce prices and specifications for the new Zafira, which they will announce closer to the car's launch at the end of the year.
Watch out for the official debut at the
Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
