What is it?
It's a
Tesla Roadster that looks like a RAV4, sort of. Neither Tesla nor Toyota is spilling the beans on the drivetrain, but we do know that Tesla has provided the running gear for this, the second-generation RAV4 EV. The first one was introduced in 1996 and dropped in 2003 after not many sales. This version goes into testing next year to make sure it's good, before seeing series production in the US in 2012.
Why's it here?
To extend eco-friendly off-roading to suburban beauty salon owners across the globe. Only 35 will be made for initial trials, and it's unlikely to hit the UK until 2013. It's been re-developed to account for the heavier drivetrain, mainly through suspension and steering modifications. Battery range is 100 miles, says Toyota.
Show stopper or floor filler?
Floor filler. It's a RAV4 with mild re-styling to make it look more futuristic and electrified. Tesla is involved, and it might prove significant in a year or two, but... ooh, look - there's that Jag with jet engines!
