The latest addition to the wave of vehicles introduced by the One Ford initiative is the new Ranger pick-up. Due to be sold in as many as 180 markets, Ford forecasts that the Ranger will have global appeal.
Striking styling helps the new truck stand out; the Ford team describes its new look as "21st Century Tough". The cosmetic changes are not just for show, as the designers have put a lot of emphasis on improving the aerodynamics to aid fuel efficiency.
Engine choices include the Dagenham-built 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel and the more powerful 3.2-litre TDCi. Models equipped with four-wheel drive get low-ratio gearboxes to enhance off-road capability.
The new Ranger is much larger than its predecessor, gaining extra cabin and load space. Ford says that the improved front and rear suspension, tauter chassis and upgraded brakes make the Ranger feel more car-like to drive.
The range will comprise of three different cab styles, 4x2 and 4x4 drive trains, two ride heights and four series levels. New features include Trailer Sway Control, which utilises the brakes to eliminate the side-to-side momentum of a trailer; and Adaptive Load Control, which adjusts the suspension so that the vehicle remains stable and level no matter what the load. Ford has also introduced a rear-view camera system to make reversing easier.
Ford's new Ranger will go into production next summer and is due to be on sale here in 2012.
