Ford has updated the Mondeo with a new EcoBoost petrol engine and improved Duratorq TDCi diesels. There is also a new, twin-clutch PowerShift transmission.
Both engines were launched in the revised
Galaxy and
S-Max; the EcoBoost develops 200bhp and 221lb.ft. The Duratorq is offered in three versions: 113-, 138- and 161bhp with 221-, 236- and 251lb.ft respectively.
The petrol engine is only available with the PowerShift twin-clutch transmission and is also offered on the two most powerful TDCi-equipped models. Ford claims the EcoBoost Mondeo will do 0-62mph in 7.9 seconds and 144mph flat-out. Comparable figures for the most powerful diesel are 9.5 seconds and 134mph. Manual transmission cuts 0.6 seconds from the 0-62 time and improves the top speed by 3mph.
As for fuel consumption, the TDCi models give 53.2mpg on the combined cycle (50.4mpg for the PowerShift) regardless of power output. That translates to 139g/km CO
2 emissions or 149g/km for the automatic. With petrol power 36.6mpg should be possible while putting 179 grams of CO
2 into the atmosphere every kilometre.
Prices start at £18,995 for the 113bhp five-door Mondeo TDCi, the EcoBoost costs £22,095 while the estate is an extra £1,100. All versions are on sale now.
