Previously scheduled for 2009, BMW's M3 CSL will not make production according to M boss, Ludwig Willisch, who added that the performance division chooses instead to focus its attention on the
X5 and
X6 models.
He told
CAR Magazine that the CSL doesn't make business sense: "Based on current numbers, there is most likely insufficient demand for the M3 CSL."
Had it stayed on course for production, it would have featured an updated version of the V8 engine in the
regular M3, but with up to 470bhp. The CSL (Coupe Sport Leichmetall) was naturally going to have some weight stripped out of the car too, with radio, satnav and air-conditioning all being deleted if it was to be manufactured. BMW would also have likely used carbon fibre extensively.
The model was going to make its debut at the
2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.
