The world's first front-mounted traffic sign recognition camera will be an option for the new Vauxhall Insignia when it goes on sale this autumn. Called the Traffic Sign Recognition, the camera is part of the Front Camera System for the Insignia that also includes a Lane Departure Warning.
Vauxhall has developed a new wide-angled lense with Hella that is mounted at the top of the windscreen. It scans the road ahead 30 times per second and can recognise speed limit and no-overtaking signs from its database.
When the system spots one of these signs, it flashes up a warning on the dashboard display up to 100-metres ahead of the sign. Vauxhall says this will help reduce driver stress and prevent speeding tickets for drivers.
The Lane Departure Warning system works by assessing the driver's normal lane-changing behaviour. If it detects a difference in driving style, it gives an audible and visual warning.
Vauxhall will give the Insignia its world debut at the
London Motor Show.
