A new engine design from Lotus offers higher power outputs than larger engines, but with lower emissions. The new design is termed a 'mild hybrid' and has been fitted to a Vauxhall Astra to show off its potential.
In the Astra, the three-cylinder, 1.5-litre engine produces 158bhp, which is 20bhp more than a standard Astra's 138bhp1.8-litre petrol engine. However, the Lotus engine produces just 149g/km of CO2 compared to the standard engine's 175g/km.
Lotus has achieved this by using high pressure fuel injection and a mild hybrid drive. The hybrid element is taken care of by a high-tech electric motor that recycles energy as the car slows or brakes.
Lotus chief executive Mike Kimberley said: "Through intelligent integration of proven and newly available technologies, we have delivered a car that engages and excites the keen motorist with superb power and a lower impact on the environment."
Transport Minister Jim Fitzpatrick said: "This engine is raising the standard for others to meet."
