Vauxhall is ditching the Vectra's name in favour of the new 'Insignia' moniker for its next mid-size family car. The car is due to go one sale in the autumn of 2008 and will first be shown to the world at the
British International Motor Show in London in July 2008.
The Vectra name has been blighted since the start of its life, when Jeremy Clarkson gave it the silent treatment in his Top Gear television review. He is credited with wiping thousands of sales off of Vauxhall's books with his scathing criticism of the original Vectra, so perhaps it's no surprise that a new name is being introduced.
We get a hint at how the new Insignia will look from Vauxhall's teaser shot of the new badge, but General Motors boss for Europe Alain Visser says: "A closer look at our groundbreaking
GTC concept car gives a good idea of how exciting Vauxhall's new design language will be."
The Insignia will have its work cut out to beat the existing class best and there are several new contenders on the way. These include the
new Mazda6 and upcoming Citroen C5 and Skoda Superb.
Vauxhall has released a humorous video to further tease us.
