Like the
VW Golf R32, but need something a bit bigger? Something like the Audi S4, but a bit more affordable? The new Passat R36 could well be the answer.
Not only is it is bigger than the R32, it's also a good deal faster with a 3.6-litre version of the FSI V6 engine producing 296bhp. The 0-62mph sprint takes just 5.6 seconds (5.8 seconds in the estate) and top speed is limited to a more than handy 155mph. VW's superb DSG gearbox channels power through all four wheels to ensure the fastest ever Passat won't be found searching for traction.
The R36 isn't afraid to show off its abilities either; a bespoke body kit draws inspiration from the R32 with deep side skirts and a modified rear bumper housing twin tailpipes. Chromed headlights, redesigned rear lights and a set of 18-inch alloys finish off the look to keep the Passat classy, if a little more forward.
Inside, grippy sports seats bear the R36 logo and the dashboard is finished in brushed aluminium panels. Equipment levels are also high, as with the rest of the
Passat range. Xenon headlights, '2Zone' electronic climate control, heated seats, and six airbags all come as standard.
Prices have yet to be announced, but the R36 is set to make its first public showing at the Essen Motorshow this week. This news has certainly got us thinking; how would the 3.6-litre engine fair in the Golf? Rather well we think...
