What's all this about?
Ford decided to rain on the Honda NSX's parade by surprising everyone at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit by pulling the covers off an all-new mid-engined supercar called the Ford GT.
It certainly looks the part...
Yes. Unlike the last time Ford made a mid-engined supercar, this new GT pays less homage to the GT40 from the sixties. This new one is as much function as it is form, which becomes more apparent when the car is viewed from above. Its teardrop cabin design wraps around the mid-mounted engine whilst the rear wheel arches join into the roof via a pair of buttresses that are as elegant as they are aerodynamically vital. Ahead of the rear wheels are vertically-fitted radiators that help to cool that 3.6-litre EcoBoost V6 engine, which Ford claims will produce in excess of 600hp.
There's a lot going on with the design.
Aerodynamics will play just as big a part as that stonking engine. The front of the car features a huge air scoop that channels air through and up over the nostrils on top of the front of the car. These partly direct the airflow over and around the cabin. That teardrop shape forces air through the gap between the engine and rear wheels, which then passes over the integrated rear wing to provide added downforce at higher speeds.
What else has it got?
Flip up doors! Unlike the last GT40, getting in and out of the Ford GT should be a much less awkward affair thanks to the dihedral door design, which is more conventional in supercar terms. The interior also looks pretty smart and carrying on the current supercar trend comes with a rectangular-shaped steering, er, wheel. Behind this is a pair of chunky paddles for the automatic transmission.
Dare I ask the price?
Well, for now Ford is remaining tight-lipped on the retail price, but it won't be cheap.
