Renault's third generation Clio stole a march on the opposition this week by scooping the prestigious Car of the Year 2006 prize. With a points total of 256, the new Clio narrowly beat VW's Passat and the gorgeous Alfa Romeo 159 to the top spot.
The prize couldn't come at a better time for the French company, as the five-door Clio goes on sale at the same time. The five-door model continues the excellent value for money established by the three-door, with prices only moderately increased over the outgoing model despite significant improvements all round, and a coveted five stars in the Euro NCAP tests.
Starring in the new range is a 1.5-litre dCi turbodiesel model, fitted as standard (in the 106PS version) with a six-speed manual gearbox, which Renault claims to be a sector first. The same engine is available in either 68, 86 or 106PS versions. Three petrol engines complement the popular diesels: 1.2-litre 75PS, 1.4-litre 98PS and a 1.6-litre with variable valve timing and 111PS. We expect to see RenaultSport models in time for a launch at the
2006 Geneva Motor Show.
