That Mazda is the car company to have come the furthest in the UK in the last four years is unquestionable. With the introduction of a completely new range, Mazda has replaced a series of aging and staid designs with class-leading models across the board. The 3 and 6 hatchback and saloon ranges lead the way in terms of value and styling in the family car class, while the new
Mazda5 MPV is packed with useful features for those with young children.
The Senku - Japanese for 'Pioneer' - is a four-seat coupe drawing on the sporting heritage of the Mazda name through the long-established success of the
MX-5 convertible, which is now supported by the excellent RX-8 coupe. Both models provide exciting motoring at an affordable price, with the MX-5 range starting at £15,000, and the RX-8 at just over £20,000.
The Senku is the latest concept from Mazda following the debut of the exciting
Sassou at last month's
Frankfurt Motor Show. With the wheels close to the front and rear extremities, the Senku's sleek body is designed to float above its large tyres. Mazda has long been engineering pioneers when its comes to engine configuration, so there is little surprise to see a rotary engine which operates as part of a hybrid powertrain. As well as its advanced engine technology, the Senku concept features an exquisitely finished leather interior designed for superior passenger comfort. Another interesting feature is the vertically sliding door design, which apparently offer easier entry to the cabin.
As with many of the concept cars at the
39th Tokyo Motor Show, the Senku is an opportunity for designers to provide an insight into car design of the future. However, it is likely that the essence of the Senku will be used to form Mazda's next assault on the coupe market.
