BMW reckons it invented the premium SUV sector when it launched the X5 ten years ago, though how it has managed to erase the whole Range Rover thing from its corporate memory bank is beyond us. Nonetheless, the original X5 certainly did begin a trend that would see a flurry of similar cars, big and small, hit the market.
To celebrate its tenth birthday BMW has unveiled a special edition, called the BMW xDrive35d 10-Year Edition. How do they think them up? It comes with a Sophisto Grey metallic paintjob as standard and gets 20-inch alloy wheels, matt aluminium trim and roof rails, and a panoramic glass sunroof. Inside there's a pair of comfort seats up front, black headlining, piano black trim, and the whole thing is swathed in silky nappa leather. There's a special '10-Year' plaque on the door cards too.
Basically, it's an M Sport specification X5 dialled up a notch, and a fitting spec it is too, because 80 percent of X5s sold over the last decade have been furnished with the M Sport treatment. Two thousand will be made, costing £53,075 each - compared to the £47,885 it costs for a regular xDrive35d M Sport.
