Although the new Berlingo Multispace is based on the Citroen C4 Picasso, Citroen claims that the "Berlingo Multispace offers the space of an MPV and the creature comforts of a family car at the price of a supermini."

Supporting that statement, prices start at £10,995 for the basic, petrol-engined 1.6i VT. For that you get an overhead storage shelf above the windscreen and under floor storage in the rear passenger footwells. All new Berlingos get emergency brake assist, driver and front passenger airbags, three Isofix child seat mounting points, electric front windows and a reach and height adjustable steering wheel.

More load carrying and storage options are available on the VTR and XTR models. Of particular interest are the internal roof bars and the Modutop storage system. The roof bars are an internal roof-rack, allowing long, flat items to be carried securely. The Modutop system makes the most of the Berlingo's height by providing three overhead storage areas: over the windscreen, running down the centre of the roof and above the boot. Also available are three-way split, folding rear seats that can be independently reclined, folded or removed completely.

With the rear seats removed the Berlingo Multispace has an impressive 3,000-litres of load space. Even with the back seats and load cover in place the boot capacity is 675-litres, which is over 100-litres more than in the C5 Touring.

Five engines are available, all displacing 1.6-litres. The least powerful unit is the 75bhp 1.6HDi; the other options are 90 or 109bhp from either a petrol or diesel motor. The smart buy appears to be the 1.6 16v HDi DFPS engine, which offers more performance and the best fuel economy combined with the lowest CO₂ emissions.
