The 2004 New York Motor Show
Not usually a show that gets the attention of the masses, the 2004 New York International Auto Show has put itself squarely on the map this year with some very tasty concept cars as well as a list of significant new car debuts: American and European. Here's a list of the interesting cars at the show:
- Tasty Buick Velite concept, which could be in the US showrooms in a couple of years, rivalling Lexus.
- The new Cadillac STS bows in, continuing Cadillac's new-found sharp design philosophy, and talking up its chances against established German competitors.
- Don't dismiss the stunning Ford Mustang GT-R as just another concept. Even the show car is race ready. We expect it to make it onto the tracks in the US at the very least.
- Debut for the Jaguar XJ LWB, with the sexy Concept 8 backing it up (potentially showing us the design direction for the Daimler brand.
- Jeep revealed their distinctive new Grand Cherokee and the Liberty, both of which we will be getting in the UK.
- All-new Land Rover Discovery.
- Lexus are taking a new design direction with the stylish LFC concept.
- The stunning Mark X concept showed us the way at the Detroit Show, and Lincoln unveiled the Zephyr in New York, returning the marque to the style of its halcyon '60s days.
- Though we may never get it in the UK, the new Saab 9-7X is certainly of interest, despite having its underpinnings based on less-than-inspiring Chevrolet SUVs.

2004 Ford Mustang GT-R concept
The 440 bhp Mustang GT-R took centre stage on Ford's New York show stand. The stunning concept adheres to rules for various GT racing series, which could herald a return to the track for the pony car. The GT-R is said to share 85% of the basic model's parts with the main feature being the 5.0-litre V8. Customers will be able to buy the engine off the shelf at the Ford dealer for around £8k.

2004 Jaguar XJ LWB
Jaguar launched the long wheelbase version of the XJ saloon at the 2004 New York Motor Show, but they maintain they will not simply badge-engineer a Daimler. The XJ's wheelbase is stretched by 5 inches and will go on sale in the autumn, initially powered by the 4.2-litre supercharged V8 only. The limo version, christened Concept 8 in its show guise will lock horns with the long wheelbase derivatives of the BMW 7, Audi A8 and Mercedes S-class.
