Following the release of its 360c concept car, Volvo has called for manufacturers to develop a universal communication standard for autonomous cars. The 360c, which Volvo envisages as a futuristic alternative to short-haul airliners, can be configured as a mobile bedroom enabling the car to drive between cities as its occupants sleep. One of the challenges associated with this is figuring out how all these cars are going to communicate with each other in the absence of human input. Whilst the 360c uses a system of sounds, colours, visuals and movements to communicate its intentions on the road, Volvo believes that manufacturers need to work together to develop a universal communications standard to avoid chaos and confusion on the roads of the future.
