Schumacher silences the doubters
Rubens Barrichello congratulates Michael Schumacher in San Marino. Image by Ferrari.

Michael and Ralf Schumacher's mother died the night before the San Marino GP. The brothers decided to race despite this. We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to them both. Michael put in a faultless drive to take victory despite Ralf beating him to the first corner. The Ferrari's pace was just too much for the Williams. McLaren remained competitive by running lots of fuel which promoted Kimi to 2nd place. Raikkonen remains very much in the lead of the championship. With new cars coming from McLaren and Ferrari soon, Williams must be worried about their 2003 championship aspirations. More details from the race weekend are available on the main Motor Racing page.

Click here for a larger image.   22 April 2003: This week Adam Jefferson took delivery of a BMW X5 3.0i and reports his great satisfaction after putting it through its paces in Cornwall over the weekend. If his initial reports are anything to go by, Land Rover had better watch out, as the Range Rover is beginning to look expensive in comparison. The full review will be online shortly on the main Road Tests page.

The podium from the San Marino round of the F3000 championship. Photograph by Red Bull Junior Team. Click here for a larger image.   21 April 2003: Often lost in the mayhem surrounding a Formula One weekend is the excellent F3000 series. The first round took place in San Marino, the day before the GP. Victory went to 2002 champions Arden, with Bjorn Wirdheim at the wheel. He lead the whole race from pole position. In 2nd and 4th were the Red Bull Junior cars of Patrick Friesacher and Vitantonio Liuzzi, sandwiching Ricardo Sperafico, driving for Coloni. More details are available on the main Motor Racing page, though we are lacking a writer for the 2003 season. If you are interested in writing motorsport reviews, get in contact.

The first is the Vauxhall Astra Stages won by Andy Burton in his mad Peugeot-Cosworth. Mark Sims went to the Hendra Tour of Cornwall and took some beautiful shots on the cliffs. David Kynaston won that race, his second victory this season in the Audi A3 Quattro. The Rallying Online team will also be covering next weekend's Pirelli International Rally.

2004 Saab 9-2. Photograph by Saab. Click here for a larger image.   20 April 2003: At the 2003 New York Motor Show, Saab made a surprise announcement - the production of a new entry-level model to be tagged the Saab 9-2. Saab are tying up with Subaru (a sister company in the General Motors empire) to reduce development costs and time. Surprisingly, Saab have announced that the 9-2 will only be sold in the USA to begin with. It is thought to be in the style of the 9-3X SUV concept, though with a definite leaning towards road use. There will be a choice of 2.5-litre naturally aspirated or 2.0-litre turbocharged engines, both mated to a four-wheel drive system. I suspect that Subaru will release a similar car below the Impreza. The 9-2 should go on sale early in 2004.

2003 Honda Civic Type S. Photograph by Honda. Click here for a larger image.   19 April 2003: Trevor Nicosia has had a drive in Honda's new Civic Type S. The Type S is less extrovert than the full-on Type R Civic, but it retains a sporty specification while looking like a regular 5-door Civic. Next month, we will have the Type R for a week so it will be interesting to compare them both, especially given the small price gap between them. Click here for the Type S review.

Kevin King won the 2003 Mini Tempest Stages rally in his MG Metro 6R4. Photograph by Mark Sims. Click here for a larger image.   19 April 2003: As part of our alliance with Rallying Online, we aim to bring our readers reviews from most national rally events. The latest story online is The Mini Tempest Stages, which saw a battle between Kevin King (MG Metro 6R4) and Paul King (Ford Escort Mk2) finish in the Metro-driver's favour. National rallying is really booming at the moment, which is not surprising given the spectacle provided.
