When it comes to sporting pedigree, few marques can eclipse BMW's longstanding history of enhancing the performance of its saloon and sport models when adorned with the famous 'M' label. Signifying development work by its Motorsport department, the
BMW M3 is the best selling and most widely recognised of BMW's sports models. The latest model to get the M treatment is the
Z4 roadster, which continues to strive to outclass its main rival, the Porsche Boxster.
The Z4 M makes its international debut at the
Detroit Motor Show in early 2006, and comes equipped with a new to the range 3.2-litre engine, which has previously been voted International Engine of the Year. Boasting staggering performance figures, the Z4 M can accelerate from 0-60mph in just 5.0 seconds, while its top speed has been limited to 155mph.
The Z4 M Roadster should be a highly individual machine, available with three new metallic paint colour options, available only to this model, while there are also a number of interior trim options.
The M Roadster aside, BMW has been busy with improvements to the Z4 range, revamping its current line-up and showing the coupe concept at the
Frankfurt Motor Show. New 2.5-litre and 3-litre engines have been introduced alongside the existing four-cylinder configurations. An optional six-speed automatic on the premium model supplements the six-speed manual gearbox, while a wide range of sports add-ons have been made available to customise and personalise your Z4.
The Car Enthusiast will be at the Detroit Show in January to see the Z4 M first hand. There is a distinct possibility that an announcement will also be made at the show about the production version of the Z4 coupe.
