What's the news?
The Shanghai Motor Show has played host to the unveiling of the new MG3 supermini that is scheduled to go on sale later this year. The new model is the second new-generation MG to be built; and will be produced exclusively at the company's Longbridge factory.
Exterior
From the front, the MG3 features the same grille and headlight design as its bigger brother, the MG6. The car's lower grille design and 'hockey-stick' LED daytime running lights help to create a sporty image too, aided by the dual-colour side skirts, roof spoiler and diffuser-style rear bumper - through which a squared-off exhaust outlet can be seen. The car's vertical rear lights also help to mask the overall height of the model, enabling it to pull off its sporty image. We would also imagine that the diamond-cut alloy wheels fitted to the show car pictured will only be available on top-spec versions.
Interior
Despite its compact size, MG claims that four six-foot adults can be easily accommodated inside the MG3. The 'rolled and raised' dashboard is said to create more space up front and provide more legroom for passengers, while sculpted front seats have been designed to give plenty of space for those travelling in the rear. In terms of styling, MG says that things like interior trim, vents and mats will be available in a choice of designs, colours and finishes, giving buyers the opportunity to personalise their car. Equipment levels have yet to be announced.
Mechanicals
Under the bonnet is MG's brand new 'VTi-TECH' petrol engine. This develops 105hp but economy figures have yet to be released. This engine will be powering a chassis that has been developed, apparently, from hundreds of thousands of miles of testing on European roads. The result is a car that MG claims to have both surefooted handling as well as impressive ride comfort.
Anything else?
Pricing and specification details are to be released in the coming months. Production is scheduled to begin in the summer, with first deliveries expected in the autumn.
