Dakar Rally 2012
Throttle pinned, sand blasting past your visor, yet another truck whistles past, leaping over the dune that is looming ahead of you. The Dakar rally is a unique piece of motorsport, with no rivals, and nowhere can you get closer to the action than on the Red Bull Dakar Rally 2012 website.
You’re not likely to find a more diverse crop of vehicles either - motorbikes, off-road trucks, pick-ups and 4x4 cars all compete in the toughest endurance race on the planet. It all happens in South America, starting on the first of January, where competitors from each corner of the globe pilot their vehicles across otherworldly terrain.
The landscape and the fearless pilots ensure the two-week event is filled with thrills and spills, some minor, some life-threatening. In the event that a driver finishes a stage, there’s hardly time to sigh with relief before their thoughts and emotions are laid bare across the site for all to see.
Despite being played out over a matter of weeks rather than hours, it's often incredibly close, with the results changing right up to the final minutes of the event. And often it’s the smallest and most insignificant of obstacles that can unseat an athlete's chances of victory. For rider Cyril Despres, who blogged on the site, it was a hole in the road filled with mud that saw him come unstuck and lose his lead. Covered in the thick dirt from head to toe, it was only due to another competitor stopping that he managed to retrieve his machine from the muddy crater. In the spirit of the event, where most act more like friends than bitter rivals, a change to the route meant that Cyril was awarded some time back.
Cyril went on to win the event, for the fourth time in his career, saying “It was an unbelievable scenario this year with Marc [Coma] and myself separated by mere seconds. I’ve now done nearly 100 rallies throughout my life and this is the one where I had to fight the hardest to get the win.”
An event that demands so much, is so hard, and so dangerous many wouldn’t even dream of attempting it. But with the Red Bull Dakar Rally 2012 site, you can feel like you’re part of the action without even worrying about sand getting between your toes.
