Even before Mercedes-Benz released the first official pictures of its
gullwing-door SLS AMG rumours suggested that a roadster version was in the works. These 'spy shots' confirm that.
The photographs indicate that Mercedes will employ a conventional fabric roof rather than the folding hardtop it uses in the SLK and SL. It appears that it will be available in a variety of colours too, including red.
Obviously the biggest difference between the SLS Roadster and the coupé will be the replacement of the unique gullwing doors with more conventional items. However, the open-top version is thought to share everything else, including the mighty 6.2-litre V8 engine. It produces 563bhp in the coupé and 479lb.ft of torque.
We expect the roadster to be a little heavier than the 1,620kg fixed-head SLS, but you can still count on 0-62mph in about four seconds and a top speed not too far shy of 200mph. The seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox is likely to be carried over.
Word is that Mercedes will give the new SLS AMG Roadster its world debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show next September. The price is estimated at £170,000.
