Now that we've all had time to digest the thought of Aston Martin grafting its grille onto a Toyota iQ, the British company has finally confirmed its production.
At some point in 2011 the Cygnet will take its place in Aston dealerships alongside the DB9, DBS and Vantage. Make of that what you will, but it's happening.
While spending a lot of time justifying the Cygnet's existence, Aston's confirmatory press release doesn't say much about the car itself. Quite when in 2011 it will become available isn't stated, nor whether it will ever go on general sale.
It's likely the Cygnet will only be available to existing Aston customers - a situation alluded to in the press release with the following:
"Our customers need a small car for urban and city use, and they want the right tools for the right job, to downsize creatively without compromising intelligence, artistry and personality."
So this will not, at least initially, be a cheap way to semi-legitimate Aston Martin ownership - particularly as its rumoured price is close to £30,000.
That's a lot of cash for... well, you don't need us to use the T word again. Aston says it's "a car without compromise, just like every other Aston Martin."
It goes on: "the Cygnet is designed to support our sports cars by providing a greater degree of freedom in the urban context; it is a very special car, a premium but compact package with heart, soul and personality."
You get the message. When we know more, so will you. See what you can glean from the new video from Aston:
