Naming conventions can be tricky things, especially when they should be logical. With AMG the numerical part of the badge usually relates to the engine displacement. Usually, but not always; for example, the latest high-performance V8 from AMG displaces 5.5-litres but comes with 'S 63 AMG' badges.
The new engine replaces AMG's large capacity, naturally aspirated unit. The old, 6.2-litre V8 needed high revs to perform developing its maximum 525bhp at 6,800rpm and with the 464lb.ft torque peak at 5,500rpm. Thanks to twin turbochargers the new motor delivers more performance with fewer revs. Two versions of the new V8 are offered with either 537- or 563bhp at 5,500rpm and torque peaks at 590lb.ft from 2,000-4,500rpm - or 664lb.ft between 2,500- and 3,750rpm for the high power version. It also has surprisingly modest fuel consumption; the S Class with this engine should return 26.9mpg on the combined cycle (compared with 19.5mpg for the current S 63 AMG).
As along with twin turbochargers the engine features direct fuel injection, variable valve timing and an air/water intercooler. These features are designed to make the most efficient use of the fuel. Further petrol is saved by 'intelligent generator management', charging the battery under braking, and a start/stop function.
The new engine will be shown off in a special S 63 AMG show car. This wears the same colour paint and sponsor stickers as the 1971 300 SEL 6.8 AMG that finished second on its race debut at Spa-Francorchamps.
