What is it?
The Z4 sDrive35is is one of the stars of the BMW stand at the Detroit show and is the harder, faster Z4 that fans have been waiting for. There are unique 18-inch alloy wheels, sports seats, 10mm lowered suspension and a retuned exhaust for more noise, but the meat of this story is under the bonnet. There lies a twin-turbo 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine producing 335bhp for 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds. Top speed is limited to 155mph and it arrives in the UK in March.
Why's it here?
It's here because BMW wanted a range topper for the Z4 line-up and the second generation Z4 is aimed at American buyers thanks to its folding metal roof. However, British buyers are kept happy with the added performance and handling benefits of the sDrive35is thanks to its lowered suspension and revised electric power steering that only uses power when needed. There's also brake regeneration to help charge the battery as the car slows, all helping towards an average of 31.4mpg.
Show stopper or floor filler?
It may be a new version of a car we're already familiar with, but the Z4 sDrive35is is still one of the stars of the Detroit show. It proves that BMW knows how to thrill sports car fans when so much of its energy is devoted to electric power and alternative fuel models. The only question now is, if this isn't badged as a Z4 M, will we be treated to an even more potent Z4 roadster in the near future? We hope so.
