The significance of the Chevrolet Aveo RS concept cannot be underestimated. Performance Chevrolets used to mean big V8 muscle cars only, but the Aveo RS demonstrates a realisation of serious competition in the USA from tuned compact hatchbacks. The Aveo RS is the answer to all those Toyotas, Hondas, Scions and Mazdas from Japan, offering younger performance car buyers on a budget a patriotic choice.
Power for the front-wheel drive concept is from a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 138bhp mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The Aveo, in more mundane form, will be built in North America from 2011, the range likely to be headed by a sports model in the vein of the show car, which debuts in
Detroit next week.
