Subaru has released more information about its plans for the
Tokyo Motor Show. We've already had a
quick preview, but now we have more details of the Hybrid Tourer Concept, Impreza WRX Carbon and Plug-in STELLA Electric Vehicle.
True to Subaru's heritage the Hybrid Tourer has a horizontally-opposed 'boxer' engine and four-wheel drive. In addition there are two electric motors, a 10kW unit for the front axle and a 20kW item at the back. Petrol power is used for normal driving but during start-up and at low speed the rear motor is used. The forward electric motor is mainly utilised for power generation but can be used to provide a power boost when needed, such as tackling steep inclines.
Other features inside the Hybrid Tourer's striking body, with its wide gullwing doors, include a height-adjustable dashboard and flat floor to maximise interior room. There is a possibility the concept, or something similar, will reach production although probably without the fancy doors.
Subaru also has a 'Carbon Edition' version of the Impreza WRX lined up for Tokyo. Along with a lightweight composite roof panel it gets full suede trim for a touch of luxury - although some fans would surely prefer a stripped-out, lightweight interior.
Finally, there is a special version of the Plug-in STELLA Electric Vehicle. First seen at last year's G8 Summit the STELLA has been re-styled by Japanese retailer BEAMS and features 'striking' decals. Power comes from a lithium-ion battery pack that is claimed to give a 50-mile range.
There is plenty of variety in Subaru's line-up; we'll bring you more details when the show opens on 21st October.
