Last year Volvo launched DRIVe, versions of each model that were designed for maximum fuel efficiency and minimum carbon dioxide emissions. Low-drag body modifications and smooth-faced wheels made the DRIVe cars easy to spot, but might not have been to everyone's taste. Now customers can order the eco-friendly models with R-Design bodywork and wheels.
Three R-Design DRIVe models are offered: the C30, S40 and V50. R-Design features include blue instrument dials, with the centre console and seats upholstered in cream leather and off-black Flex-Tec. External modifications include spoilers (front and rear), side skirts and 17-inch alloy wheels. DRIVe models gain additional wind deflectors, R-DESIGN badge and DRIVe badges.
Chassis changes include 10mm lower suspension. This reduces aerodynamic drag to cut fuel consumption and is also claimed to improve the handling by lowering the centre of gravity.
Fuel consumption for all the R-Design models is 62.8mpg on the combined cycle. Official CO2 emissions are 119g/km, which puts the models in the £35/per year Vehicle Excise Duty band. It is worth noting that the R-Design models are not currently fitted with the Start/Stop technology or under-body aerodynamics that help the plain DRIVe vehicles to return 72.4mpg, although the Start/Stop system may be offered in the future.
Prices start at £17,240 on-the-road for a C30 while the S40 will cost £19,095 and £20,595 for a V50. All models are available to order now with the first deliveries scheduled for July.
