What is it?
The latest in a long line of hot Renault Clios. Renault has facelifted the Clio range and took the opportunity to update the Clio 197 at the same time. There is more modern styling, which we think works particularly well with the Renaultsport's wider stance and body modifications. Other features carried over from the 2009 Clio range include integrated satnav, cruise control with speed limiter, climate control and automatic lights and wipers. The engine has been tuned to give a little more power but the all important CO
2 emissions are lower too making this a hot-hatch that is in tune with the times.
Why is it here?
Renault has plenty of interesting machinery on its stand but dare we suggest the restyled Clio lacks some of its predecessor's visual flair - unless it's in Clio Renaultsport 200 guise that is.
As the name suggests, power is up 3bhp compared with the outgoing Clio 197, though the power peak is now 150rpm lower than before. Maximum torque is unchanged at 156lb.ft though it is found lower down the rev range than before. Revised gear ratios help improve acceleration; Renault claims a 0-62mph time of 6.9 seconds with a top speed of 141mph. Fuel consumption is 34.5mpg and CO
2 emissions are 195g/km.
Two versions will be offered, the Clio Renaultsport 200 and the more focussed, Renaultsport 200 Cup. The latter is lighter, sits lower and has faster steering. There is no word on pricing as yet; that should come nearer the launch date.
Show stopper or floor filler?
The
Clio Renaultsport 197 is one of our favourite hot hatchbacks and on paper the revised model looks like it will be even better. With the new Clio due to arrive in the UK in May we won't have to wait too long find out how it drives - keep an eye on our
reviews section.
