In 1925, Bentley launched an evolution of the Speed model called the Supersports, which featured weight reduction and a more powerful engine to make it the first production Bentley to hit 100mph. Now, eighty-four years later, the illustrious badge has been resurrected and the company has applied the same philosophy to its
Continental GT Speed resulting in a top speed over twice that of its forbear. Say hello to the Continental Supersports.
Broody looking thing, isn't it? That's thanks to the replacement of all chrome with a dark-smoked steel finish created by the techy sounding 'Physical Vapour Deposition' process. Four new colours will also distinguish the Supersports from other Continental models, while the 20-inch alloys can be painted or left in standard 'Black Chrome'. The effect of the modest visual makeover is pronounced - and so it should be considering the punch this bad boy is packing.
Behind the dark new grille nestles a breathed on version of the GT Speed's twin-turbocharged W12. Power and torque are up to 621bhp and 590lb.ft respectively, which goes some way to explaining how the Supersports hits the benchmark 62mph from a standstill in 3.9 seconds, on the way to a top speed of 204mph. You think that's quick? Consider that the Supersports will also catapult its occupants from 50-70mph in just 2.1 seconds, or from 30-50mph in only 1.6 seconds. That's just not normal.
Assisting acceleration through the gears is a revised six-speed ZF automatic transmission. Shift times have been reportedly halved and the 'box now features downshift blipping to enhance the sportiness. Backing that up are carbon ceramic brakes and an upgraded - and lightened - chassis. In fact, the Supersports weighs in at 110kg less than the GT Speed model, thanks in part to the removal of rear seats.
Weight reduction also assists with fuel economy and though the Supersports won't win the greenies over to the brand it does represent a change in Bentley's strategy, as it's the first model to have dual-fuel flexibility, maintaining its performance regardless of the mix of petrol and E85 bio-ethanol in the fuel tank.
After a world debut at the
Geneva Motor Show, the new Continental Supersports hits the market later this year. Prices have yet to be announced.
