Out of all the quirky vehicles sold only in the Japanese domestic market, few non-enthusiast cars have made it into European hands, but the Nissan Cube has somehow charmed fans around the globe and Nissan has confirmed that the third-generation model will be sold here by the end of 2009.
The new Cube makes its world debut this week at the
LA Auto Show, indicating that it will also go on sale Stateside. If you liked the distinctive 'curved squares' design theme of the previous model, then you'll potentially love the new car, as the designers have gone to town on styling detailing, christening the new Cube a "bulldog in sunglasses".
An upright, two-box shape remains with very few straight lines, despite the car's name. A major new design feature is the asymmetric rear door and glass treatment. The door is hinged from the right and opens in a similar manner to most fridge doors, while it appears that the glass window in the door wraps around into the left-hand side door. It's a highly distinctive feature that you might expect on a concept car, but not a showroom model.
Design and personality are the most important aspects of the new Cube according to Nissan, saying that it will excite buyers who might not normally have any interest in a car beyond its function. The theme continues inside, where a geometrically shaped dashboard incorporates coloured instruments and a huge selection of customisation options, such as "shelf expression" and "magic rubber bands".
In practical terms, the Cube seats five, with the rear bench seat adjustable for either more legroom or more boot space. Nissan has confirmed that the European market will receive both its 1.5-litre dCi turbodiesel and a 1.6-litre petrol engine, though full details will be announced later.
We expect sales to start in Britain late in 2009, with potential rivals including the new
Kia Soul.
