Vauxhall decided to do something special to mark the arrival of the new Insignia. A car was dropped 45 metres to the ground in six seconds in front of a crowd by Tower Bridge in London.

On Saturday a 3.2-ton orb "crashed" into Potters Fields on the South Bank of the Thames near Tower Bridge. A mock clean-up mission took place on Sunday and the orb was hoisted 45 metres into the air.

Today, in front of an invited crowd, the Vectra replacement fell from the orb at 17mph. Once the Insignia landed it was driven onto the stage by GM Europe's Chief Marketing Officer.

A complex rig, incorporating three kilometres of cabling, 152 metres of air hose and thirteen pneumatic brakes ensured Vauxhall's newest car landed safely.

The Insignia makes its official debut at the motor show tomorrow where Vauxhall will announce prices and specifications for the range. The British International Motor Show opens to the public on Wednesday and runs until 3rd August.
