Only last month we got to sample the delights of the new
BMW 3 Series Coupé in both 325i and 335i guises. Today BMW has released photographs and details of its new 3 Series Convertible, closely based on the Coupé's styling and initially sharing those same two engines.
It wasn't a very well kept secret, but the biggest news for the fourth generation of BMW's four-seat Convertible is that it adopts the
de rigueur folding hard top. Although BMW is quick to point out that the fabric roof was superseded as much for visibility - and a feeling of space and light in the cabin - as it was for security; and let's face it, fashion.
Nonetheless, the 3 Series Convertible (note that BMW has not changed its title) is one of the first cars in its class to feature a retractable hard-top (
Volvo C70 aside) and it will be interesting to see whether rivals follow suit.
The new Convertible features a few innovations too, such as the "world's first" leather upholstery that actually reflects the sun's rays, staying cooler than untreated leather when exposed. BMW also attempted to address the issue of practicality with the new Convertible. The boot holds 350 litres with the roof in place and 210 litres with it folded. An added practicality is the option to access the boot from inside the car, even with the roof stowed.
Both 325i and 335i models come as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, though the excellent new six-speed auto is also available, complete with steering wheel-mounted shift paddles. The 325i Convertible starts at £33,030, with the 335i at £37,895. Other variants to closely follow the initial six-cylinder models include a 170bhp 320i, a 330i Convertible and a 330d option. No doubt others will come along too.
We'll get our first glimpse of the new 3 Series Convertible at the
Detroit Auto Show in January. Watch out for our extensive coverage.
