The Renault Koleos Concept, though an unexpected surprise of the
2006 Paris Motor Show, is one of those show cars that really shouldn't be called a concept, as it is thought to very closely represent Renault's first proper SUV, due for sale in 2008. Renault is one of the last mass-market car makers to join this marketplace, but its offering promises to be stylish and practical if this car is anything to go by and no doubt safe if all its other cars' five-star Euro NCAP safety test ratings are an indication.
Though Renault does not have a lot of SUV experience, its alliance with Nissan should see the Koleos utilising the same four-wheel drive system as the
X-TRAIL, meaning that the driver can select between two and four-wheel drive on the move. It is also likely that two-wheel drive versions of the Koleos will become available. Obviously this car is not to be thought of as a serious mud-plugger, but one that can facilitate a family and its active lifestyle.
To emphasise its rugged nature, the Koleos concept features chunky 19-inch alloy wheels and solid skidplates at the front and rear, complemented in design by the door sills. The latter extend down to ease entry into the elevated cabin. Once inside, there is no roughing it. Beige and brown leather swathe most surfaces and the dashboard is a stylish departure for Renault. Among the stylised controls is a set of 'adventure' items including read-outs for atmospheric pressure, compass bearings, altitude and gradient. We should see a production version at next year's
Frankfurt Motor Show.
