Henry Ford is quoted as once saying that the Model T could be bought in any colour so long as it's black. This is probably the first (and last) time that anyone will talk about one of the first mass-produced cars in the same paragraph as a new car from supercar maker Lamborghini, but that's what your dealer will tell you when you enquire about the new Gallardo Nera.
Saying that, by the time you get to the showroom, you may find that it is too late to order the Nera, as Lamborghini is producing only 185 examples worldwide.
This Gallardo is really just a showcase for Lamborghini's personalisation program it calls "ad personam" and as such has no changes to the mechanicals. Then again, there is nothing inadequate about the regular Gallardo's 520bhp 5-litre V10.
Two basic colours are available (Nero Serapis and Nero Noctis) to which are added matt black painted side mirrors, rear spoiler and several body panels on the front and rear including the door sills and rear apron. The effect is quite eye-catching, or invisible if it's night time! Complementing the body treatment are matt black 'Callisto' alloy wheels, silver brake callipers, white side indicators and darkened rear lights.
The Nera's interior has also been significantly reworked, featuring lashings of leather and Alcantara in the 'Nero Perseus' and 'Bianco Polar' colours. The list of changes is extensive and extends to the instrument rings and door handles.
Pricing has yet to be announced, but it is likely to be largely irrelevant when Lamborghini pulls back the covers on the car at the
Paris Motor Show next week. We'll be there.
