Peugeot has begun testing its latest rally project, the 207 Super 2000. Following in the thickset tread marks of the 205 T16 and the 206 WRC - two of the most successful rally cars ever - the Super 2000 is currently being developed under the watchful eye of Peugeot Sport’s Technical Manager, Bruno Famin. The car certainly has a lot to live up to, but early indications are promising and the test drivers are said to be “satisfied” with both handling and performance.
We non rally-driving folk haven’t been forgotten, either; a hot road-going version will be buzzing around our B-roads from November.
For anyone with an interest in hot-hatches - and lets face it that’s most of us - this is potentially a very big deal. Peugeot’s back catalogue includes some of the most coveted hot-hatches in history; namely, the 205 GTi, 306 Rallye and 106 GTi. So, while it might have gone off the boil a bit recently, this announcement is sure to prick up enthusiasts' ears.
Power will come from a 150bhp 1.6-litre engine. Developed with BMW this new turbocharged unit will also feature in the new
MINI Cooper S and should ensure rapid enough progress. Ok, so 150bhp might give some way to other super-hatches, like the Clio Sport 197 and the forthcoming Civic Type-R, but it’s worth considering that the original 205 1.6 GTi had just 105bhp, and many believe that to be the best of all. Not only that, but torque output is very impressive; 180lb.ft at just 1400rpm. For those who want even more punch, a GTi version is set for release next year.
Peugeot persevered with GT Turbo’s predecessor, the
206 GTi, but it never quite made a worthy successor to the legendary 205. Let’s hope that Peugeot is back on track with this latest offering. Having driven the diesel-powered GT, we think there is a very good chance of that.
Prices start at £14,345 - falling neatly between the
Fiesta ST and Polo GTi - and equipment levels are generous with six airbags, ESP, tyre pressure sensors, dual-zone climate control and a panoramic ‘Cielo’ sunroof fitted as standard.
Both cars are due to be unveiled at the
Paris Motor Show next month. Not to worry if you won’t be making the trip; we’ll be there to bring you all the latest news.
